Tennessee Spring Break staycations that your family will remember

Top Family Friendly Tennessee Spring Break Spots!

There are times when a cross-country flight to get away from it all is needed, but other times when a quick car ride to explore a nearby city really hits the spot. My family has started preferring a good old-fashioned, staycation, but it doesn’t hurt to live in Tennessee, one of the most beautiful states in the country! Tennessee offers the perfect backdrop for an unforgettable spring break staycation that will delight any family. With temperatures warming up to a comfortable 57-81°F during spring, our state provides an ideal climate for outdoor adventures and family fun.

A Tennessee, Spring Break, family staycation offers a ton of perks for your family. You will hear a lot less “are we there yets?” when you are, in fact, almost there. Your family will also save money on travel, which can be put towards new experiences once you arrive at your destination. Not to mention that for many families a near home vacation offers the chance to visit with old friends (and sleep on their couches!).

Here are our top picks for a great Tennessee Spring Break experience!

Best of Big City Fun (in no particular order)

Big cities bring the bright lights, late nights, and go, go, go! Tennessee has some amazing big hustle and bustle cities that still manage offer that southern hospitality we all know and love!

1. Nashville

We can’t talk big cities in Tennessee without mentioning Nashville. While many have driven through Nashville or visited for a wedding weekend, perhaps you haven’t considered the family friendly fun that the state capital offers. Nicknamed “Music City,” Nashville offers more than just musical experiences – it’s a place where children can learn about everything from local innovations to historical landmarks. Nashville boasts some fascinating quirks, like being the birthplace of cotton candy – invented by a local dentist and candy maker in 1897 – and home to the world’s longest-running radio show, the Grand Ole Opry.

My family lived in Nashville for four years and found some creative options for kid size fun. Some of my kids’ top favorite family friendly Nashville spots are:

3. Memphis

It’s easy to forget just how long Tennesse is! If you are like me, in East Tennessee, Memphis is more of a destination location than a staycation. That said, Memphis is totally worth the drive! Not only is Memphis the birthplace of rock ‘n’ roll and home to world-famous barbecue that has been tantalizing taste buds for generations, but Memphis offers many kid friendly locations and activities. The city pulses with unexpected stories and innovations, from its musical heritage to its commitment to family entertainment. Memphis offers your family a perfect blend of historical significance and modern excitement, with numerous opportunities to explore everything from civil rights history to musical innovations. Your kids can discover the city’s rich cultural tapestry through interactive museums, outdoor events, and unique experiences that make Memphis a memorable spring destination.

I love Memphis! It just feels so cool. My kiddos haven’t gotten to spend nearly enough time in Memphis, but after researching these one-of-a-kind family activities, we will be visiting again very soon.

4. Knoxville

Knoxville is the “big city” closest to my home and we love to head over for a quick weekend getaway. Knoxville’s unique character shines through its blend of historical significance and modern attractions, nestled beautifully between the Cumberland Plateau and the Smoky Mountains. With a college town vibe that balances quirky charm and warm hospitality, Knoxville offers something for your whole family – whether you’re interested in outdoor adventures, cultural experiences, or simply soaking in the local culture. The city’s proximity to natural wonders and its own urban wilderness provides endless opportunities for exploration, making it an ideal spring destination for families looking to create lasting memories.

As regular visitors of Knoxville my kiddos have their personal favorite spots. Some of our favorites are:

5. Pigeon Forge/ Gatlinburg

The traffic and hustle of Pigeon Forge and Gatlinburg speak to its popularity and fun! A Nationally recognized tourist destination right in the heart of the Tennessee mountains. In the spring, these twin mountain towns transform into a wonderland of blooming rhododendrons and vibrant wildflowers. Tennessee’s beloved tourist destinations blend wholesome family entertainment with breathtaking mountain scenery, making them perfect spring break destinations. The area boasts a unique combination of natural wonder and family-friendly attractions, with world-renowned theme parks, live entertainment, and countless opportunities for outdoor exploration. Your family can experience the rich Appalachian culture, enjoy live music and shows, and immerse themselves in the region’s stunning biodiversity.

Best of Small Town Charm

Do you live in a big Tennessee city and are looking to get out of town this Spring Break? Tennessee’s smaller towns often offer a quieter more relaxing experience. There may be a little less to do late night, but your days can be filled with shops, family-owned restaurants, and one-of-a-kind southern charm.

  1. Sewannee, TN– Sewannee is arguably one of the most beautiful places in Tennessee. Your family will love exploring the stunning natural beauty of the Domain, visiting the University of the South campus and admire its Gothic architecture, and hiking to scenic overlooks and waterfalls.

Your family will enjoy the train ride, paddle boats, playgrounds, splash pad, outdoor sports, and creek of Steele Creek Park (a favorite monthly visit for my kids!).

  5. Jonesboro– Jonesboro transports you back to a time when things were simpler. During your family’s visit you will want to spend a great deal of time just wandering the streets of Tennessee’s oldest town. There are so many historic shops and restaurants to try! If your travel timing lines up with the Storytelling Festival that is not to be missed!

It is beautiful and there’s something to see around each curve. Once your kiddos get stir crazy, head over to explore the Bald River Falls and other waterfalls in Cherokee National Forest/
  10. Bell Buckle– In Bell Buckle you will be able to completely disconnect. Bring board games, turn off phones, and enjoy the peace. Your family will wander the streets of the quaint downtown area with its antique shops and cafes. You’ll enjoy a picnic at Bell Buckle Park. Best of all, you’ll just be together.
